  1. This README file accompanies JUMPERS v2.00.  The following files are included
  2. for this revision:

  7. JUMPERS is used to
  8.    
  9.         o      Reconfigure the IPX LAN driver to match settings you want
  10.                to make on a network board in a dedicated IPX
  11.                workstation.  
  12.   
  13.         o      Reconfigure the LAN driver in the bridge (router)
  14.                software to match settings you want to make on a network
  15.                board installed in a bridge (router).   
  16.     
  17.         Note:  Only drivers specified as JUMPERS configurable can be
  18.         reconfigured.  At present, only the TRXNET and 3C503 LAN drivers are
  19.         JUMPERS-configurable.  See your Novell authorized reseller for
  20.         information about other JUMPERS-configurable drivers as they become
  21.         available.   
  22.  
  23. When you use JUMPERS to reconfigure LAN drivers, you do not need to 
  24. regenerate the IPX files or bridge (router) software.  JUMPERS also allows
  25. you to use custom options not provided in utilities used to generate IPX or
  26. bridge software.   
  27.    
  28.         Note:  Be sure to reconfigure the LAN drivers before you change the
  29.         network board settings.   
  30.    
  31. If "Packet Size" is included in the list of options for the LAN driver you
  32. select in JUMPERS, you can change the workstation packet size specified in
  33. the IPX file of a dedicated IPX workstation.  (Although you can change the
  34. packet size specified in the bridge (router) software, the bridge only routes
  35. the packets and there is no particular advantage in making such a change.) 
  36.   
  37. The server packet size specified in the server operating system determines
  38. the maximum packet size on the network (the maximum packet size determines
  39. the buffer size).  However, if the packet size specified in the workstation's
  40. IPX file is smaller than that in the operating system, the workstation
  41. operates with the smaller packet size.   
  42.    
  43. Larger packet sizes in the workstation IPX driver will improve driver
  44. throughput, while smaller packet sizes will free up more memory for
  45. applications.   
  46.    
  47. If your driver allows you to use JUMPERS to change driver configurations, we
  48. suggest you set the workstation packet size to the same size as the server's
  49. maximum packet size.   
  50.    
  51. You can make a working copy of JUMPERS on a floppy diskette and use it in the
  52. floppy drive of the console, bridge (router) console, or at appropriate
  53. workstations. 
  54.    
  55. If you load JUMPERS in SYS:PUBLIC, regular users can use it to reconfigure
  56. the LAN drivers in their workstation IPX files.  
  57.   
  58. To reconfigure the LAN driver in the bridge (router) software:
  59.    
  60. 1)      Run JUMPERS, specifying the filename of the bridge software when
  61.         prompted for a filename.   
  62.    
  63. 2)      Select the appropriate LAN driver and change options.   
  64.    
  65.         A list of options for the LAN driver you select appears with the 
  66.         current configuration for that driver (If the driver allows, packet 
  67.         size is one of the parameters).      
  68.    
  69.         Select any parameter and choose from a list of supported values.   
  70.    
  71.         JUMPERS reads all LAN drivers, including disk drivers and LAN drivers
  72.         JUMPERS cannot configure.  If another driver in the operating system
  73.         uses a particular option, that option will appear with an asterisk 
  74.         (*).
  75.  
  76.         If JUMPERS cannot configure a driver, the driver will not appear on 
  77.         the list, but its current configuration will still be used to check 
  78.         for option conflicts.   
  79.    
  80. 3)      Exit JUMPERS by pressing <Esc>.   
  81.    
  82. 4)      Bring the bridge (router) down.   
  83.    
  84.         If you changed only the packet size:  All you need to do is reboot. 
  85.    
  86.         If you have a bridge with micro channel architecture:  Run REFERENCE
  87.         (or similarly-named program) to change the board settings.  Then 
  88.         bring the server up.   
  89.    
  90.         If you have an AT-compatible server:  Turn off the computer.  Change 
  91.         the network board settings. Then bring the server up.   
  92.

  94. To reconfigure the LAN driver in the workstation IPX file:
  95.    
  96.         Note:  Some microchannel workstation drivers are self-configuring. In
  97.         this case, use the REFERENCE (or similarly-named) program to change
  98.         network board settings. Use JUMPERS only if you want to change packet
  99.         size.     
  100.    
  101. 1)      Log in at the workstation.   
  102.    
  103. 2)      Run JUMPERS, specifying the IPX file when prompted. For example
  104.         (depending on the location of the boot files), type   
  105.    
  106.         A:IPX.COM   
  107.            or   
  108.         C:\IPX.COM   
  109.    
  110.         If you have renamed the IPX file, use the new filename.   
  111.    
  112. 3)      From the list of "Shell Driver Options," select the options you want
  113.         to change and change them.   
  114.    
  115. 4)      To save the changes, press <Esc> and then <Enter>.   
  116.    
  117. 5)      Exit JUMPERS by selecting "Yes" at the confirmation box.  
  118.         
  119.         Note:  If you have more than one workstation with the same
  120.         configuration, copy the modified IPX.COM file (depending on whether 
  121.         your workstations boot from diskettes or hard disks) to
  122.   
  123.         o      Boot diskettes;  
  124.    
  125.         o      A network directory (you can download the file to each
  126.                workstation's boot diskette or hard disk).   
  127.    
  128. 6)      Log out.     
  129.    
  130.         If you changed only the packet size:  All you need to do is reboot.
  131.    
  132.         If you have an AT-compatible workstation:  Turn off the workstation.
  133.         Change the network board settings.  Boot the workstation.
